On April 17, U.S. Consul General in Florence Daniela Ballard visited Livorno Elementary Middle School (LEMS) for an engaging session with Ms. Ferreri’s middle school Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) class.

The visit provided students a unique opportunity to gain firsthand insights into the world of diplomacy and the importance of essential academic and life skills.

In preparation, students researched the role of a consul general and studied Ballard’s biography. Working in small groups, they used the Question Formulation Technique (QFT) to develop thoughtful and informed questions.

Ballard shared her inspiring career path, which began in investment banking before she joined the U.S. Department of State. She highlighted the importance of Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization and Reading (WICOR) in her work. She explained that persuasive writing is critical in diplomacy, enabling her to effectively advocate for U.S. interests. Collaboration, she added, is essential for building strong teams and making well-informed decisions.

Throughout her talk, Ballard offered meaningful life lessons, encouraging students to discover their passions and pursue them with determination. She urged them not to let others define their potential, and to be willing to make sacrifices in order to reach their goals.

“Sometimes you must do what you do not want to do to eventually do what you love,” she told the students.

Ballard also spoke about the rigorous path into the diplomatic corps, describing the exams and skills required. Her authenticity and engaging style resonated with students, who said she was one of the most impactful speakers they had ever met.

The event concluded with a lively Q&A session, where students eagerly asked questions and sought advice on their future educational and career paths.

“It was inspiring that she didn’t settle on the first job she found and instead looked for something she truly wanted to do,” said sixth-grader Tommy Disario. “I think that’s important because what’s the point of waking up every morning if you don’t enjoy the job you do?”

Ballard’s visit left a lasting impression on students and staff alike, reinforcing the importance of real-world connections in education and inspiring the next generation of leaders at LEMS.
